Introduction to ski touring

Introductory days out looking at the skills required to explore the Scottish mountains on ski! Participants need to be competent skiers to get the most out of an introduction to ski touring however there is no requirement to have ever ski toured before. As a guide you should be confidently skiing red runs on piste as a minimum standard.

During an introductory course we will look at how ski touring equipment works and how it differs from regular alpine equipment. Navigating on skis, finding the good snow, terrain and avalanche risk assessments.

We will introduce the use of avalanche transceivers, shovels and probes but this course should not be seen as a full avalanche rescue course.

Price: £400 per day (plus £50 for additonal person)
Max group size: 6

Avalanche Avoidance & Rescue

Over the course of 1 day I can teach you how to use your avalanche rescue equipment to find single and multiple casualties, as an individual rescuer as well as part of a team.

Additionally the training will focus heavily on avalanche avoidance by following the Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) process of ‘Be Avalanche Aware’ (BAA). This process involves 3 key stages: Planning, Your Journey & Key Places. Within each stage we consider 3 elements: the avalanche hazard/weather conditions, the group and the terrain we are in or intending to be in.

Price: £400 per day (plus £50 for additonal person)
Max group size: 6

Rope work for ski mountaineers

As your ski touring skill and experience increases the chances are you will be seeking out more technical objectives. During a rope work for ski mountaineers course we will cover a variety of snow anchors that will enable you to safely access a slope in order to assess the avalanche hazard or to bypass a corniced entrance.

We may also look at some basic climbing techniques to enable you to safely ascend a steeper gully that you then intend to ski down.

Price: £400 per day (plus £50 for additonal person)
Max group size: 3

“I wanted to drop you a note to say how much I enjoyed the course this weekend. Scott was an excellent instructor and played a great role in leading and guiding while empowering us as a group to make decisions in planning and on the hill.”
